itel Mobile is an entry-level smartphone brand. This means that they are solely focused on making phones for the bottom end of the smartphone market. This is why you have never seen a premium flagship itel phone. This is why all itel phones you know are cheap and/or affordable. The company is able to do this by a careful selection of parts suppliers and by focusing on how to squeeze out the maximum value out of basic features and specs. This is no easy feat. As you know, there is only so much you can squeeze into a smartphone that costs between $50 and $100, which is itel Mobile’s primary target. A number of key components of smartphones are expensive. These include the display, the processor or chipset, memory (RAM and ROM), and camera. And these core areas are the main areas where the engineers of itel Mobile have to find innovative ways to cut costs. As such, you do not find the most fanciful display features in itel phones. For example, no AMOLED panels, and no Gorilla Glass protection. Also, you won’t find itel phones having large amounts of RAM (or even storage memory). And only the cheapest phone processors are used as well.
What processors do itel phones use?
Because of the need to keep costs down, itel phones use chipsets from two affordable chipset suppliers – Mediatek and UniSoc (formerly Spreadtrum).
Are there any itel phones with Snapdragon chipsets?
While itel phones do not traditionally use Qualcomm Snapdragon chipsets because they are costlier than chipsets from competitots like Mediatek and UniSoc, on a few occassions, the company has gone out of their way and produced smartphone models that use a Snapdragon processor. You read that right: there are a few itel phones with Snapdragon chipsets. Here they are: itel A22 itel A22 runs Android 8.1 Oreo (Go Edition) and has a 5-inch, 480 x 854 pixels display. It is also fitted with 1GB RAM and 8GB intyernal storage, as well as a 2400 mAh battery. For photography, there is a 2 MP camera on the front and a 5 MP camera at the back. It is powered by the entry-level Qualcomm Snapdragon 210 MSM8909 chipset. itel A22 Pro The A22 Pro has 2GB RAM, which is double the RAM of the A22. It has 16 GB internal memory, and the same 2MP front camera, 5MP rear camera, and 2400 mAh battery of its sibling. Like the A22, it uses the Snapdragon 210 chipset Like the A22, itel A22 pro is a 2018 model. itel S42 The S42 has a 5.65-inch display, a 13-megapixel selfie camera, a 13-megapixel rear camera, a rear fingerprint scanner, a 3000 mAh battery, and 3GB of RAM. Under the hood is a Snapdragon 425 processor. itel S42 is a 2018 model and runs Android 8 Oreo out of the box. Conclusions As you can see from the above list, 2018 was the year that itel Mobile experimented with Snapdragon processors. That was the year all the listed models – itel A22, itel A22 pro, and itel S42 -were manufactured. There have been no other itel phones with Snapdragon chipset since then. It does not look like the experiment worked well in delivering the most value for money smartphones at the prices that itel Mobile sells its devices. Since then, the company has increasingly used chipsets from UniSoc, as those are available at the most affordable price points.
